ABSTRACT

Introduction: In the academic world, scientific publication has become a constant problem, both in its quantitative and qualitative elements. ABSTRACT

A key global health objective is to promote the advancement of scientific production in disciplines with low publication volume, as opposed to specialties addressing pathologies that represent the greatest global disease burden (1). Dermatology is one such discipline, which has experienced substantial growth in research on immunopathogenic, pathophysiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects (2-4). The extent to which Latin American authors and institutions have been involved in publishing scientific articles in the dermatology journals with highest impact worldwide remains unknown.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This systematic scoping review aimed to map and characterize the scientific production of researchers from Portuguese-speaking African institutions that align with the Food and Nutrition Security Strategy of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries. The literature search was conducted using six electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Scopus, and Web of Science), with no restrictions on the year of publication nor language. Through the search strategy, 10,061 records were identified, of which 502 documents and 654 researchers were selected by Food and Nutrition Security specialists along three axes: 1) Policy governance; 2) Access to food; 3) Availability of food. Institutional researchers from Mozambique (66.9%), Guinea-Bissau (15.9%), and Angola (11.4%) presented the most publications and international collaborations. Researchers from Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, and Equatorial Guinea institutions added only 5.8% of the total production. A greater number of publications (61%) was related to axis two of the Food and Nutrition Security Strategy of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries. The most studied themes were sustainable development, child malnutrition, and agricultural production for the first, second, and third axis, respectively. In general, scientific publications have shown limitations in their approaches due to the challenge imposed by the complexity of the food system. However, there has been a quantitative evolution in publications in the last decade, with a greater participation of researchers from Portuguese-speaking African institutions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Despite the importance of women in clinical research, no assessment has been made of the fraction of women in a leadership positions in the Cardiology journals of the SBC. Objectives: To assess the fraction of female authors in the International Journal of Cardiovascular Sciences (IJCS) and the Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC Cardiol) over the last decades. Methods: We searched the original articles of the ABC Cardiol, from 2000 to 2019, and of the IJCS, from 2010 to 2019. We surveyed the number of first and senior female authors and the total number of original articles from 2010 to 2019. We calculated the total proportion of female authorship and compared the first quinquennium with the second. Only data from the ABC Cardiol were analyzed to assess the temporal evolution of the two decades. We used the chi-square test to assess the differences within each journal and between them. The IBM® SPSS® software was used in the analyses. The level of significance adopted was 5%. Results: From 2010 to 2019, 1,157 original articles were published in the ABC Cardiol and 398 in the IJCS. We observed that women are more prevalent as first authors in the IJCS compared to the ABC Cardiol, but men prevail as senior authors in both journals. From 2010 to 2019, there was no significant change in the proportion of female authorship. Throughout the decades analyzed for the ABC Cardiol, there was a projection of linear growth of female authorship, with the slope of the line being greater in the first authorship than in senior authorship. Conclusions: There is gender disparity, with lower female representativeness in authorship in the articles from the Brazilian Cardiology journals analyzed: Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia and International Journal of Cardiovascular Sciences. We believe that based on these results, more efforts should be implemented in the search for gender equity in the cardiology scientific production published by these journals.

ABSTRACT

Technology and medical knowledge change at a speedy pace, and the number of articles published every year grows exponentially. Additionally, the quality of the literature is variable, and therefore professionals should be selective about what they read, starting from critical appraisal of the sources consulted enabling them to apply the findings of evidence-based medicine. Journal clubs are a strategy included within research training aimed at developing critical reading skills in their participants. They also foster evidence-based medicine, continuing education, and the development of leadership and communication skills. Various studies have evaluated the impact of journal clubs, and a number of systematic reviews have aimed to summarize the effects of these interventions on students, residents and professionals. Findings suggest heterogeneous results and limited theoretical foundations. In that context, the purpose of this article is to present the most updated information available about the impact of journal clubs on the training in skills related to the critical appraisal of information sources in health sciences syllabuses. The sources analyzed indicate that exposure to multiple sessions of a journal club makes it possible to teach and develop critical appraisal skills, come in contact with biomedical literature and help disseminate clinical research(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: The problems with the articles' authorship are frequent; however, in Cuba there are few investigations on the topic. Objective: To determine the authorship changes in the publication of works presented in medical student forums at national level in Cuba and its associated factors. Methods: Observational and cross-sectional study using analytical techniques, that included all the works presented in 2016, 2017 and 2019 editions of the medical student forums at national level. A Google Scholar search strategy was carried out in order to check if these works had been published in scientific journals. After, authorship changes were identified and associated factors were looked for. Prevalence ratios (aPR), 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI) and p values using generalized linear models were obtained. Results: Of the 129 published works, 89,9 % (n= 116) had authorship changes. In the multivariate analysis, there was more frequency of authorship changes when the articles were published in professionals' journals (aPR: 1,29; IC 95 %: 1,11 - 1,50; p= 0,001) and when the publication occurred later to the event (aPR: 1,20; IC 95 %: 1,01 - 1,42; p= 0,042); that which was contrary when the corresponding author was a student (aPR: 0,79; IC 95 %: 0,66 - 0,95; p= 0,010), adjusted by three variables. Conclusion: Almost the entirety of the articles had authorship changes and some factors associated to a higher or smaller frequency in those changes were determined (publication, time and corresponding author).

ABSTRACT

Peer review is an important process that makes it possible to take decisions before the publication of an article. However, little information is available in Latin American scientific journals about the professionals involved in this process. The purpose of the study was to determine the geographic and gender distribution of peer review in the Peruvian Journal of Experimental Medicine and Public Health. Data about peer reviewers were obtained from the acknowledgements sections of journal issues published from 2010 to 2017. The country of origin was identified from the institutional affiliation reported by peer reviewers, and gender was derived from their proper names. In the event of doubt about a reviewer's gender, a search was conducted for images and public academic profiles available on the Internet. A total 1 628 acknowledgement mentions were found, 60.4percent (n = 983) of which referred to overseas reviewers, mainly from Spain, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Argentina. 71.1percent (n = 1 158) of the reviewers were male and 28.9percent (n = 470) were female. 35.0percent (n = 344) of the female reviewers were foreign and 19.6percent (n = 126) were from Peru, whereas 65.0percent of the male reviewers were foreign and 80.6percent were from Peru. Peer review in a Peruvian biomedical scientific journal was mainly conducted by professionals from other Spanish-speaking countries. A gender gap was observed which is wider for participation of Peruvian female reviewers(AU)

ABSTRACT

International scientific cooperation has become a key factor for emerging countries to improve research advancement, publication and funding. An analysis of local publications indexed in the Web of Science and co-authored between Brazilian researchers and non-residents was carried out, in the context of an analytical discussion on global scientific cooperation and with the aim of illustrating changes in the last two decades in regenerative medicine regarding this topic. The article concluded that in the last decade Brazil increased scientific co-authorships significantly domestically and with advanced country authors, especially with American authors, but also to a lesser degree with those of other emerging economies in and beyond Latin American. Local researchers have also published on their own several articles of global impact, revealing the academic quality attained in local sciences related to the area. Collaboration has undoubtedly opened doors for Brazilian regenerative medicine globally, but historical scientific inequalities remain.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of the publication of a scientific article in an indexed journal by Peruvian doctors and its associated factors during the year 2016. An analysis was performed of secondary data from the National Healthcare User Satisfaction Survey (ENSUSALUD) 2016. The result variable was the publication of an article in an indexed journal from the Web of Science, Scopus or Medline, whereas the exposure variables were sociodemographic and academic. Means, standard deviation, frequencies, percentages, and chi-square and Student's t test were used to evaluate the differences in the publication of a scientific article. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were developed. ENSUSALUD 2016 complex sampling was considered in all estimations. Data were obtained about 2 216 doctors, of whom 13.0percent (CI 95percent: 9.1-18.3) reported having published a scientific article in an indexed scientific journal. The adjusted model found an association between the publication of a scientific article and residence in Lima (OR: 0.30; CI 95percent: 0.17-0.53), intermediate command of the English language (OR: 9.01; CI 95percent: 2.24-36.70), advanced command of the English language (OR: 21.0; CI 95percent: 4.74-93.12) and being a medical specialist (OR: 2.57; CI 95percent: 1.08-6.12). The publication prevalence of a scientific article by Peruvian doctors is low. Residence in Lima, intermediate or advanced command of the English language, and being a medical specialist were factors associated to the publication of a scientific article(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract In the present work we use text mining as a treatment tool for a large scientific database, with the aim of obtaining new information about all the publications signed by Argentine authors and indexed until 2019, in the area of life sciences. More than 75 000 articles were analysed, published in around 5000 media, signed by about 186 000 authors with a workplace in Argentina or in collaborations with Argentine laboratories. Using automated tools that were developed ad hoc, the text of around 70 800 abstracts was analysed, seeking, through non-supervised digital detection, the main topics addressed by the authors, and the relationship with health problems in Argentina and their treat ment. Results are also presented regarding the number of publications per year, the journals that have published them, and their authors and collaborations. These results, together with the predictions that were obtained, could become a useful tool to optimize the management of resources dedicated to basic and clinical research.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Solidarity Program, probably the largest global initiative to encourage and support research in four promising drugs, named Remdesivir, Hydroxychloroquine, β Interferon and the combination Lopinavir / Ritonavir, to reduce the mortality of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). OBJECTIVES Considering the potential impact of Solidarity Program to restrain the current pandemic, the present study aims to investigate whether it was designed upon indicators of scientific productivity, defined as the level of the production of new scientific knowledge and of the institutional capabilities, estimated in terms of scientific publications and technological agreements. METHODS The scientific documents on Alphacoronavirus, Betacoronavirus, Gammacoronavirus and Coronavirus were retrieved from Scopus database while the technological agreements on coronavirus were obtained through Cortellis. As for the institutions and countries, we have considered the data on author's affiliations in both set of data. For comparison, we included the analysis of documents related with other drugs or therapies, such as vaccines and antibodies, which were listed in a Clarivate's report on coronaviruses research. FINDINGS Most of the analysis refers to documents on Coronavirus, the largest group. The number of documents related to WHO's drugs are almost five times higher than in the other groups. This subset of documents involves the largest and most diverse number of institutions and countries. As for agreements, we observed a smaller number of institutions involved in it, suggesting differences between countries in terms of technical and human capabilities to develop basic and/or clinical research on coronavirus and to develop new forms or products to treat or to prevent the disease. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Hence, the results shown in this study illustrate that decisions taken by an international scientific body, as WHO, were mainly based in scientific knowledge and institutional competencies.

ABSTRACT

The acts of scientific misconduct potentially performed by authors when planning, conducting or reporting the results of their studies may lead to rejection of the future paper and even the banning of the author alongside the corresponding administrative and/or legal sanctions. Plagiarism is the wrongful appropriation of copyrights, academic texts, research methods, charts and ideas, as well as the fabrication and falsification of information, all of which classifies as instances of scientific misconduct in the ethics of scientific publication. An increase in the number of instances of plagiarism is observed in the university environment when analyzing academic studies, theses, diploma papers and dissertations using anti-plagiarism software. However, unawareness of the strategies to prevent plagiarism is common among undergraduate and graduate students. The purpose of the present study was to present information about academic plagiarism, discussing the main concepts, causes, associated factors and impact of plagiarism from the perspective of scientific publication ethics(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study analyzed the profile of publications related to the health of the older adults in the Journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, in terms of quantitative evolution, methodological approach, thematic and institutions involved. The selection of articles considered the title, abstract and descriptors and covered all the content published between 1996 and 2019. The articles included were classified according to the year of publication, type, theme, methodological approach and institutional link of the first author. Data analysis was based on absolute and relative frequencies, in addition to summary (mean) and variability (standard deviation) measures. The results showed a consistent increase in publications on the health of the older adults in the Journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, with a predominance of the quantitative approach, mainly focused on investigating the topic related to health conditions and the use of health services and supplies. In the majority, the main author was linked to a public teaching/research institution, located in the Southeast region. The results indicate that the journal contributed to give greater visibility to the health of the older adults, but that the publications on this theme reproduce the inequality observed in the national scientific production.
